CONTEXT

Year 6 had been reading 'Refugee Boy' by Benjamin Zephaniah. This is a powerful and inspiring story.

Early on in the book Alem, the central character, is abandoned by his father in a hotel just outside London. They have just fled Ethiopia/Eritrea because of persecution.

Another example from the same text is here.

Geography examples are here.

MARKING WRITING An example of marking in Year 6

Quick marking

1

We would not use this piece of work as a basis for setting targets etc

This boy has clearly tried to hard to use figurative language and has transformed the poem from the the first, to second , to third person. He has also carefully edited his work.

2
The teacher response is short and to the point.

3
A sticker is also used that indicates that more poetry will be written later on. You can see it here.

4
The children consolidate their understanding of figurative language at the start of the next lesson.
